What defines equality? -According to Merriam Webster, equal is defined as" being the same in quantity, size, degree, or value".
What is Racism?
- a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
How are minority groups treated differently?
- treated bad, not a lot of respect, discourse of cilvil rights poor education, no political power. no wealth, unemployed. As opposed to other people who have wealth, employment, political power, education and cilvil rights, and respect.
- The constitution said that all men were created equally, but in the 1960s blacks were still being mistreated there was segregation in the schools
- In MLK's "I Have a Dream Speech," he tried to explain to people that the people must accept each other for who they are on the inside than what they represent on the outside
Minority Groups: Minority groups are any group that lacks power in our society. Racial: Blacks, American Indians, Asian Americans
people are still big on racism, blacks are still treated differently along with other people in minority groups. People treat them differently because they are not the same as others.
Congress of Racial Equality: was an organization from 1942 to the mid 60s that was open to "anyone who believes that 'all people are created equal' and is willing to work towards the ultimate goal of true equality throughout the world."

According to an annual survey, 58% of the people surveyed said Muslims face large amounts of discrimination (after 9/11)

People that are gay cannot have a non-U.S. spouse become a full citizen
They cannot collect benefits upon death of a spouse
With federal taxes they cannot file jointly as a married couple
The Supreme Court ruled that the Boy Scouts of America can ban homosexuals from serving as troop leaders.
The Clinton administration said that gays can be discharged from the military for homosexual contact and for stating their sexual orientation, but the military is not allowed to ask them their orientation.

Constitution: As stated in the U.S. Constitution equality is that "All people are equal, it is not birth, it is virtue alone that makes the difference."
Gettysburg Address: It stated "...a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal"
14th Amendment: Promised equality for slaves
Declaration of Independence: It says ""all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these, are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness", which was written by Thomas Jefferson. It really meant that only white men were equal, not women or children.
